Word Bytes | Prayer of the Children (Part 4)
Word Bytes is a montly flash fiction column. All these stories include an LGBT prsence, but it is rarely the focus. Rather than write pieces that focus on LGBT issues, I want it to be quietly in the background as a small detail of reality. Where it should be.

Disclaimer: The following flash fiction strays from my normal path of fantasy writing to bring to light some all too real issues. These issues can be rather distressing, though not graphic. Please also note this is still a work of fiction. Characters, events, and incidents are either the products of my imagination. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.
Forgive, O Lord, for Thy dear Son ,
I hate yelling at my son, but it was for his protection. Jack’s friendship with Nolan needed to end, at least until the boy got better. I saw how the boy looked at my son. It just wasn’t right. I can’t let my son be around such a bad influence.
Jack was a good boy, but he was emotional. He didn’t want to stay away from his best friend. Not that I blame him. After all, they grew up together.
However, Paul was clear in 1 Timothy, as a church elder I have a responsibility to raise my son properly, as an example to all other parents. If I let The Devil into my own household, how can I fulfill my role as a church leader. If Jack were to fall into sin, how could I show my face in front of the members?
I was appointed to care for them. I had to stay strong.
The ill that I this day have done.
The new pastor seemed fine so far. He’s young, but his outline for the next month of sermons were all biblically affirming. With all the nearby churches falling prey to Satan’s lies, I need to remain vigilant. More than ever, we need to keep to the Bible’s teachings.
Praise God the CRC and RCA synods haven’t fallen victim. They still have a clear stance and clear rules set on how to address such things. It is an important discussion for sure. Those poor people need the light of Christ, and it’s up to us to bring it to them. But, we can’t change the Truth just to be more popular
How can we save all the lost from the Great Deceiver if we give in to his lies?
I need to keep the whole congregation safe. I need to keep my family safe.
That with the world, myself, and Thee
The Ward family had been good upstanding members of the church for so long, but they were facing some serious problems. Problems that threatened the other members of the congregation. Thankfully, not many people know about the situation. If word spreads, it could become a poison from within the church.
It was a shame really. If I hadn’t been so complacent, if I had fought harder to get the previous pastor kicked out sooner, maybe his words wouldn’t have confused the poor mother so much.
Such a sweet woman, I wish I knew how to help her. I found a place that can help her son, and gave her the brochure. If only I had given it to her before the former pastor had given her a pamphlet full of lies.
I’d speak with her husband about the matter, but he still hasn’t returned from his business trip overseas.
“Lord, please guide her down the narrow path. Help her have the strength to truly help her precious son. Please, give me the strength to stand up to evil. Protect your children from the lies that threaten them.”
I have already failed one family.
It won’t happen again.
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.
